In January 1854, the writer Leo Tolstoy stayed for two days in Stavropol while serving in the Caucasus.
He wrote about it in the story "Cossacks".In memory of the writer's visit to the city, one of the 400-year-old oak trees on General Ermolov Boulevard was named after Lev Nikolayevich, because he witnessed Tolstoy's stay in Stavropol. The memorial plaque was installed under the oak tree in 2017. The oak is attributed to the National Heritage of the peoples of Russia.
