The key factor in the shallowing of the Caspian Sea is actually not global climate change, but environmental problems.
This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during a speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. He called on all Caspian littoral countries to join forces to prevent irreversible consequences.
"Joint efforts of the Caspian littoral states are needed to stop the environmental catastrophe with unpredictable consequences. Azerbaijan is also ready for close cooperation with the UN in order to solve this problem," Ilham Heydarovich stressed.
In his speech, the Azerbaijani president recalled that back in 2022 he raised the issue of the steady deterioration of the environmental situation in the region.
He stated that by now the situation has deteriorated markedly, the water level in the Caspian Sea is decreasing at a record pace. At the same time, environmentalists record a decrease in the volume of river runoff entering the sea.
Earlier, EADaily reported that for eight months of the year, oil and gas condensate production in Azerbaijan amounted to 18.39 million tons. Compared to January-August last year, production decreased by 4.7%.
