Italy has become the first country in the European Union to adopt a comprehensive law regulating the use of artificial intelligence. This law, among other things, restricts children's access to artificial intelligence and provides for imprisonment for malicious use of this technology, for example, the creation of deepfakes.
Details are given by the publication Profit.Ro .The government of Giorgi Meloni said that the bill, which is a continuation of the groundbreaking law The EU law on AI, adopted several years ago, "represents a decisive step towards transforming the use of AI in Italy." Its goal is to promote the "human—centered, transparent and secure use of AI," with a particular focus on "innovation, cybersecurity and privacy protection."
The bill provides for a prison sentence of one to five years for the illegal distribution of content created or processed using artificial intelligence, if it causes harm. The law also provides for harsher penalties for using technology to commit crimes, including fraud and identity theft. In addition, it introduces stricter rules on the use of technology in the workplace, as well as in a number of sectors such as health, education, justice and sports. Children under the age of 14 will need parental consent to access artificial intelligence.
