The base of the Russian Pacific Fleet in Kamchatka, where most of the nuclear submarines are located, was damaged due to the tsunami that hit the Pacific coast of the country on July 30. It is reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph with reference to satellite images taken on July 31 in the morning by the Umbra Space satellite.
The publication points to the base of the Russian Navy "Rybachy" (part of BUT Vilyuchinsk) in the waters of Krasheninnikov Bay (part of Avacha Bay) in the south of the peninsula.
Judging by the pictures, part of one of the piers has deviated from its original position, which may indicate that it has come off the pier. It is assumed that the waves caused by the magnitude 8.8 earthquake reached the Navy base, located about 120 km west of its epicenter, 15 minutes after the start of the tremors.
"Modern Borei-type nuclear submarines and Soviet Delta submarines are based at the point. However, according to preliminary analysis, they were not injured, as they were not moored at the damaged pier at the time of the tsunami," writes The Telegraph.
As reported, last Wednesday the strongest earthquake since 1952 occurred in Kamchatka. According to the Kamchatka branch of the FITC EGS RAS, its magnitude was 8.7. A tsunami threat was announced, residents were urged not to approach the shore in dangerous areas.
