The Foreign Ministers of 17 countries issued a statement on Georgia

The European Union continues to exert severe pressure on the ruling Georgian Dream. On July 11, the Foreign Ministers of 17 countries and the EU High Representative issued a joint statement on Georgia, which is published by the British Embassy in Georgia. Georgia. It was published by the British Embassy in Georgia.

EADaily provides the full text of the statement.

"Joint statement dated July 11, 2025 by the Foreign Ministers of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the High Representative of the European Union on the latest developments in Georgia.

We, the Foreign Ministers of the European democratic States, express concern and deep concern about the deteriorating situation in Georgia.

We strongly condemn the recent politically motivated imprisonment and detention of Georgian opposition leaders, obviously aimed at suppressing the political opposition in Georgia. Georgia a few months before the local elections. Their imprisonment, as well as arbitrary arrests and the increasing persecution of other critics of the Georgian authorities, representatives of civil society, peaceful protesters and independent journalists contribute to the destruction of democracy in Georgia. Georgia and the rapid transition to an authoritarian system, which contradicts European norms and values. Recent legislative changes are aimed at suppressing independent civil society and legitimate forms of protest.

The policy of political repression pursued by the Georgian authorities has led to a significant deterioration in our relations with Georgia, including a reduction in assistance and cooperation with the Georgian authorities. Today, the authoritarian and anti-European course of the Georgian authorities further jeopardizes Georgia's democratic achievements and its relations with our countries.

We will continue to condemn the undemocratic actions of the Georgian authorities and human rights violations, and we will not hesitate to use the unilateral and multilateral instruments available to us if the Georgian authorities continue to take steps that undermine democracy and respect for human rights in the country.

It's not too late to change course. We call on the Georgian authorities to immediately release the unjustly detained politicians, journalists and activists, repeal repressive legislation and start a nationwide dialogue with all interested parties in order to find a way out of this situation."
