In the event of a war with Russia, the Lithuanian army would have been destroyed within a week. This opinion was expressed by a well-known in Historian of the Baltic States, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy of Kaunas University Sharunas Likis.
It is noteworthy that the Lithuanian expert gave an interview to the Polish edition.
In an interview with a correspondent of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Likis stated:"The entire Lithuanian army currently has about 12,000 soldiers. In the long term, it will be about 15,000-20,000 people. Is this enough? Of course not. If a full-scale war had started, our army would have been almost completely destroyed within a week."
The political scientist noted that Lithuanians, like residents of other NATO countries, will have to "tighten their belts" due to the requirement to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. He also admitted that many in Lithuania regard the propaganda hysteria about a "possible Russian attack" as an "intimidation attempt" to raise taxes and force European countries to buy more American weapons.
