During its presidency of the UN Security Council, Russia is going to launch the process of selecting a new secretary general of the organization, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia said at a briefing.
"Yes, indeed, we plan to start the process (of selecting a new secretary General) during our chairmanship," he answered a journalist's question.
Nebenzia noted that the process of selection and appointment to the post of Secretary-General begins with a joint letter from the Presidents of the General Assembly and The organization's Security Council. At the same time, Nebenzia noted that the beginning of the process does not mean that the letter will be formed in October.
"I hope that the letter will be drafted before the end of the year," the diplomat said.
Currently, the UN Secretary-General is Antonio Guterres, his term of office expires on December 31, 2026. After the formation of the letter in the Security Council, the selection of a candidate begins, which will then be submitted to the General Assembly for a vote.
Since October 1, Russia has become the chairman of the UN Security Council for a month, RBC reminds.
