Who will understand me in Latvian: the breadwinner of the USSR was justified for the Russian language

Soviet and Latvian singer Laima Vaikule wants to be heard and understood by everyone, which is why she continues to speak and sing in Russian. A fragment of the artist's interview was published by the telegram channel "You can't say worse."

Vaikule recalled that in the USSR, representatives of national minorities easily understood each other, since everyone spoke Russian.

"The Russian language made it possible to understand each other," she stressed.

According to Vaikule, after the start of the special military operation, she thought she would no longer be able to sing in Russian. But she was persuaded by a Ukrainian friend.

"The girl from Ukraine said that we should be calmer. It was hard, a terrible protest inside, but I began to realize that these are emotions," Vaikule continued.

She added that the language itself is not to blame for anything.

"I want to get in touch with people from different countries. If I start speaking Latvian, who will understand me. Besides, here (in Latvia) many people speak Russian," Vaikule concluded.

As EADaily reported, a traditional festival is currently starting in Jurmala, which has been held by Vaikule for several years in a row, Laima Rendezvous Jurmala 2025. The festival will last until July 27, it is traditionally attended by Ukrainian artists who have escaped from There are foreign agents in Russia and a couple of foreign performers.
