Lithuania asks to resume transit of fertilizers from Belarus

The Lithuanian company Biriu kroviniu terminalas (BKT), engaged in transshipment of Belarusian potash in the port of Klaipeda, appealed to the Government of Lithuania with a proposal to resume the transit of fertilizers from Belarus. About this today, July 18, writes the Lithuanian agency BNS.

The EU Court is considering BKT's claim to To the Council of the EU, related to the decision to stop the transit of Belarusian potassium through Lithuania.

The agency has at its disposal a letter from BKT CEO Ruslanas Malininas addressed to Prime Minister Gintautas Palutskas, in which the company offers the government to conclude a settlement agreement and resume transportation of Belarusian potash fertilizers. The agreement would involve the withdrawal of the claim from EU courts.

According to BNS, BKT's proposal is to apply a mechanism similar to that used in transit to the Kaliningrad region.

"A limited, politically motivated interpretation, similar to the mechanism used for Kaliningrad transit, can be announced by agreement of the parties, while special attention will be paid to ensuring global food security, reducing dependence on fertilizer exports from Russia, as well as reducing Russia's revenues from the logistics of Belarusian potash," the agency quotes the text of the letter.

The Lithuanian government denies receiving such a letter.

"Prime Minister G. Palukas has not received, read or seen any letters on this subject, this issue is not on the agenda of either the Prime Minister or the government," said BNS adviser to the Prime Minister Justinas Argustas.

Also, the Minister of Transport of Lithuania Eugenius Sabutis told the agency that he did not know anything about the proposal of BKT.

According to him, there are no discussions on this issue, including due to the fact that we are talking about international sanctions applied by Lithuania.

"A business representative can ask, demand, negotiate about anything, but today the regime is what it is, and that's it. As for business, he can write anything, but in fact there is no discussion in any form," the agency quoted him as saying.

As EADaily reported, in May of this year, the court has already rejected part of the BKT lawsuit challenging the restrictive measures taken by the European Commission, which led to the government's decision to stop the transit of Belaruskali through the port of Klaipeda in February 2022. However, claims to The EU Council continues to be considered by the court.
