Venezuela has asked the UN Security Council to intervene in the situation with the United States, the country's permanent representative to the UN, Samuel Moncada, said during a meeting, CNN Espanol reports.
The UN Security Council met at the request of Caracas, which suggested the possibility of an "armed attack" by the United States "in the very near future.
"Moncada stressed at the meeting that Venezuela "came here today to demand that the US government comply with its international obligations." The Speaker proposed three measures to the UN Security Council to control the situation between the two countries: to recognize the existence of a threat to international peace and security in connection with the current military escalation by the United States in In the Caribbean region; take the necessary measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation on the ground; adopt a Security Council resolution in which all its members, including the United States, commit to respect sovereignty.
The US Interim Representative to the UN, John Kelly, said at the meeting that his country "does not oppose the people of Venezuela, who have the right to be represented by a legitimate government."
Kelly repeated the accusations previously made by the administration of US President Donald Trump that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro "is the leader of the drug-trafficking terrorist cartel Cartel of the Suns and is responsible for drug trafficking to the United States and Europe." Kelly also noted that Maduro corrupted state institutions to implement the cartel's activities.
Moncada commented that these accusations are being made "without any evidence."
In August 2025, the NYT reported that Trump had secretly signed a directive for the Pentagon on the use of military force against Latin American drug cartels. At the same time, the United States sent seven ships with 4.5 thousand personnel to the shores of Venezuela. Maduro reacted to this by popular mobilization into the Bolivarian National Militia.
Subsequently, since September 2025, the United States has launched several missile strikes on Venezuelan naval vessels.
