US President Donald Trump has said he is not going to call on Israel to stop strikes on Iran. He told reporters about this at the airport in New Jersey.
"I think it would be difficult to make such a request now. If someone wins, it's a little harder to do than if someone doesn't win," Trump said.
The US president doubted that Europe could help in the current situation around Iran.
In his opinion, Tehran wants to negotiate with Washington, not with Brussels. The deadline that he is ready to give Iran to reach a deal on the nuclear program, Trump called two weeks.
"We will see what this period of time will be, but I give them time, and I would say two weeks is the maximum," the Republican stressed.
According to Trump, it is difficult for him to understand why Iran needs nuclear energy when the country has oil.
"They have some of the largest oil fields in the world. I just don't know why they need it for civilian developments," the US president said.
"It's one thing when certain countries say: we want to have a certain amount, do a little nuclear (energy), because we need it for (generating) electricity, for air conditioning and so on. But it's a little difficult to understand why you need it when you have some of the largest oil reserves in the world," Trump added.
Iran has been exchanging strikes with Israel since mid-June. The latter launched Operation Rising Lion against him and stated that it was aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear and missile programs.
The United States did not enter the conflict, but supported Israel, Washington began the transfer of military equipment to the region.
The White House said that Trump will make a decision about a possible attack on Iran within two weeks. Reuters wrote that the United States was in direct talks with Iran after Israel struck it. According to the agency, the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Araqchi, told the special envoy of the US president, Steve Witkoff, that Tehran would not return to nuclear negotiations if Israel did not stop the strikes.
