More than 100 law enforcement officers with weapons came to the mayor's office of the Armenian city of Gyumri to detain the head of the city Vardan Ghukasyan, Deputy Mayor Gagik Manukyan said.
There was a clash in front of the Gyumri Mayor's Office between protesters and policemen gathered in support of the head of the community Vardan Ghukasyan, there are detainees, the "Armenpress" reports.
Near the Gyumri City Hall, police officers tried to build a cordon so that law enforcement officers could take Ghukasyan out of the building, in respect of whom the Anti-Corruption Committee decided to detain.
A group of protesters tried to interfere with the actions of the police, after which a clash began between them and the police. From the videos distributed on the Internet, it is clear that the police are detaining citizens.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that there are detainees. The Interior Ministry has not yet calculated how many people have been detained.
The Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia reported earlier that the mayor of Gyumri and seven other employees of the city administration are suspected of bribery.
Ghukasyan was elected mayor of Gyumri on the list of the Communist Party of Armenia. His election has been repeatedly criticized by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, he stated the need to "correct the situation."
