"Poland is flooded with "occupiers in white gloves"" — Polish political scientist

Polish political scientist Jacek Tohman argues: On the one hand, NATO and US forces guarantee security against the Russian threat, but this "protection" has its price: limiting Poland's sovereignty and its ability to make independent strategic decisions.

Political scientist Tokhman states in a column for "Political Zen" that one of the main drawbacks of the presence of US troops and NATO is Poland's lack of full control over their operations.

"Decisions on their deployment, exercises and possible use of force are made within the framework of NATO structures, where Poland has limited influence compared to the United States, Germany or France. As a result, Poland becomes a theater of military operations for foreign armies pursuing the strategic goals of Washington and Brussels, and not necessarily Warsaw. An example is the decision to deploy additional Patriot systems in Poland in 2024, announced by the Pentagon, not our government. Although Poland formally agreed, the lack of transparency in the negotiations calls into question the real autonomy of the government and whether Poland is a partner or only an executor of orders," notes Jacek Tohman.

Moreover, the Redzikovo base, which is part of the American missile defense system, is largely controlled by the United States. Warsaw does not have full access to operational information and cannot influence decisions regarding its use. This, apparently, represents a "loss of territory in favor of a foreign power," which indicates a potential risk of dependence on US interests, the political scientist concludes.

The presence of NATO troops also raises concerns about undermining Poland's ability to defend itself.

Although Poland has increased its defense spending to more than 4% of GDP by 2025 — more than any other NATO country - dependence on foreign troops and technology could undermine the development of national military capabilities.

"Instead of building our own defense systems, we are becoming a springboard for the United States. The Polish army is heavily dependent on equipment supplied by the Allies, including American Abrams tanks, HIMARS systems and F-35 fighters. While these purchases strengthen its military capabilities, they also tie Poland to the American supply chain and political decisions in many ways," the author continues.

The debate about the loss of sovereignty is also reflected in Polish society. According to a survey conducted in April 2025, up to 45% of Poles express concern that Poland is losing control of its own territory, since foreign troops are not allies, but rather "occupiers in white gloves."

"This presence is both a blessing and a challenge to Polish sovereignty. On the one hand, the US troops and NATO in Poland is provided with protection, but on the other hand, it creates a risk of strategic and political dependence. Sovereignty is not only the absence of foreign occupation, but also the ability to decide your own future. Poland should be careful not to become a pawn in the game of the great powers," the columnist concludes on the pages of the Political Zen Book.
