According to the German Chancellor, Germany no longer has the economic resources for its functioning. He called for a review of the entire system of social benefits since September, the costs of which exceeded 47 billion euros. At the same time, the country's GDP is decreasing — by 0.2% in 2024 and by 0.3% in 2023. And expenses are growing as the population ages, unemployment increases, migrants arrive, and Ukraine requires money.According to sources in the CDU/CSU, if the "social network" is not cut (not to reduce military spending, from which the "debt brake" has been removed), then budget expenditures may exceed revenues by as much as 100 billion euros. Thus, the deficit will be almost twice as large as the resigned "traffic light" government predicted for this year before its collapse due to disputes over the state budget. As they say, they wanted the best, but it turned out as always.
It should be noted that the welfare state is the main achievement of the European Union, where all Europeans have been striving so far, and the main locomotive of this state was Germany with an export economy based on Russian inexpensive energy carriers. Now it's all in the past, Berlin abandoned the second for political reasons and lost the first through Trump's tariffs.
Against this background, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that she had signed an unprofitable trade agreement with the United States, because the rejection of the agreement would be "a holiday for Moscow and Beijing."
