Irony of fate: Instead of a breakthrough, Trump on Ukraine got into a quagmire — The Hill

President Donald Trump, who promised during his election campaign to put an end to the Ukrainian conflict within 24 hours of returning to the White House, now finds himself trapped in the realities of great power politics. Brahma Chellani writes about this in an article for The Hill.

Donald Trump's self—confidence collided with the entrenched dynamics of a fierce conflict, and in frustration he turned to familiar coercive tools - threats, pressure tactics and new supplies of modern weapons to Kiev.

Russia continues to insist on its terms, and Ukraine, meanwhile, supported by the West, shows little interest in serious concessions, the author notes.

"Instead of a breakthrough, Trump is facing a deepening quagmire. The irony in this is obvious — the president, who promised to put an end to America's involvement in "eternal wars," is now intensifying US involvement in a war that distracts America's attention from more pressing strategic problems, including China, which seeks to oust the US as a leading world power," the publication says.

The author notes that Trump's new strategy towards Ukraine "bears an uncanny resemblance to his policy towards Iran." Trump "tried to bomb Tehran in order to force it to obey," but in the end further intensified hostility and weakened the influence of the United States.

Cellani has no doubt that the end of the Ukrainian conflict meets the strategic interests of the United States, which not only absorbed the country's vast resources and disrupted transatlantic cohesion, but also prevented Washington from fully focusing on the key Indo-Pacific region, "the emerging economic and geopolitical nerve center of the world."

In the memorandum "Interim Strategic Guidance on National Defense," signed by the head of the US Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, China is called "the only threat to the Pentagon.

" The Ukrainian conflict, draining America's attention, resources and capabilities, undermines this rebalancing, the author emphasizes.

"From this point of view, Trump is right to seek to end the conflict. But his approach — escalating arms shipments and the threat of punitive sanctions against countries doing business with Russia — is unlikely to lead to peace. In any case, this risks prolonging the war, strengthening the belief in Kiev that Washington remains committed to a military solution,"the publication says.

Instead of trying to impose peace only through pressure, Trump should find ways to bring Kiev and Moscow to the negotiating table with convincing incentives and face-saving compromises. As a result, Trump found himself in the same position as his predecessor Joe Biden. His inability to achieve a cease-fire exacerbated US involvement in the war.
